When homes and businesses flooded in Platt Bridge, local people were left wondering when help would come. National government didn’t step in — so I did. I’ve fought for flood defences and helped secure funding, but I’ll keep going until the job is fully done.
The Story
On New Year’s Day 2025, Platt Bridge residents were once again forced from their homes. For years they had been crying out for proper protections — and been ignored. I stood with them and made it my priority to act. I tasked Greater Manchester with coming out with a first-of-its-kind flood plan that has been rolled out across our region. Now, pumps and other protections have been installed across the area.
But local action can only go so far without national reform. I want to take the fight all the way to the top so places like ours are no longer ignored.
Families here know better than most the devastation flooding can cause. Homes have been damaged, possessions lost and lives disrupted. For many people, every period of heavy rain brings anxiety about what might happen next.
That’s why I’ve backed the Hindley Flood Project. This includes pushing for investment in long-term flood protection for Platt Bridge and surrounding communities. Recently, £3 million was secured towards the project. It’s an important step forward, but there is still more work to do.
This isn’t just about flood defences – it’s about whether communities like Platt Bridge get the protection and investment they deserve. I believe they should. No family should have to spend every winter worrying whether their home will be next. That’s why I’ll keep fighting until the full flood defence scheme is delivered.
